History
- 1948The Pakistani rupee was introduced after partition, replacing the Indian rupee; the State Bank of Pakistan was established the same year.
- 2019Pakistan moved to a more market-determined exchange rate.
- 2023Remaining exchange-rate caps were removed, letting the market set the rate more freely.
Coins and banknotes
One rupee is divided into 100 paisa. Coins: 1, 2, 5 and 10 rupees (paisa coins are no longer in everyday use). Banknotes: 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1,000 and 5,000 rupees, issued by the State Bank of Pakistan.
