Hong Kong Dollar (HKD)
The Hong Kong dollar (HKD) is the official currency of Hong Kong, divided into 100 cents. Under the Linked Exchange Rate System it is kept within a band of 7.75–7.85 to the US dollar.

The dollar is kept in a band of 7.75–7.85 to the US dollar under Hong Kong’s Linked Exchange Rate System, so against the dollar and the dirham it barely moves.
Exchange-rate regime
Linked Exchange Rate System (pegged to the US dollar). Since 17 October 1983 the Hong Kong dollar has been linked to the US dollar under a currency-board arrangement, at a linked rate of 7.80. Refinements in 2005 defined a Convertibility Zone of 7.75–7.85, within which the Hong Kong Monetary Authority keeps the currency.
The issuing central bank
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority, established in 1993, manages the Linked Exchange Rate System; banknotes are issued by three commercial note-issuing banks, and the HK$10 note by the Government of Hong Kong.
History
- 1983The Linked Exchange Rate System was launched on 17 October 1983, fixing the dollar to the US dollar at 7.80.
- 1993The Hong Kong Monetary Authority was established.
- 2005Refinements introduced a Convertibility Zone of 7.75–7.85 to the US dollar.
Coins and banknotes
One dollar is divided into 100 cents. Coins: 10, 20 and 50 cents and 1, 2, 5 and 10 dollars. Banknotes: 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 dollars; most notes are issued by three note-issuing banks, with the 10-dollar note issued by the Government.
