Bahraini Dinar (BHD)

The Bahraini dinar (BHD) is the official currency of Bahrain, divided into 1,000 fils. It is pegged to the US dollar at 0.376 dinars and is one of the highest-valued currency units in the world.

Against the US dollar the dinar is fixed at about 0.376 dinars to the dollar, so that figure barely moves; because the UAE dirham is also pegged to the dollar, the dinar-dirham rate is almost fixed too. It is one of the highest-valued currency units in the world.

Exchange-rate regime

Fixed peg to the US dollar. The dinar is fixed at 0.376 to the US dollar (about 2.659 dollars per dinar). The Central Bank of Bahrain states this rate has been effectively unchanged since 1980; the formal peg to the US dollar was declared in December 2001, having previously been anchored to the IMF Special Drawing Rights.

The issuing central bank

The Central Bank of Bahrain, established in 2006 (succeeding the Bahrain Monetary Agency), issues the dinar and maintains the dollar peg.

History

  1. 1965The Bahraini dinar was introduced in 1965, replacing the Gulf rupee at 10 rupees to the dinar.
  2. 1980The dinar’s rate against the US dollar has been effectively stable since 1980, per the Central Bank of Bahrain.
  3. 2001Bahrain formally declared the peg to the US dollar at 0.376 in December 2001.

One dinar is divided into 1000 fils. Coins: 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 fils. Banknotes: ½, 1, 5, 10 and 20 dinars, issued by the Central Bank of Bahrain.
