USD Coin USDC
A US-dollar stablecoin known for transparent, regulated reserves.
Real market price · as of 16:46 GST
USDC is fiat-collateralised with reserves in cash and short-dated US Treasuries. In March 2023, USDC briefly fell to about $0.88 when part of its cash reserves were held at a bank that failed; it fully recovered its peg within days once those funds were confirmed safe — a real illustration that even well-run stablecoins carry reserve and banking risk.

What it is
USD Coin (USDC) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of one US dollar, issued by the US-based company Circle. It is one of the two largest dollar stablecoins.
How it works
Each USDC is backed by cash and short-term US Treasuries held with regulated financial institutions, with monthly attestations by a major accounting firm — a relatively transparent reserve model.
Why it matters
USDC is widely used in trading, payments and decentralised finance, and is often preferred where reserve transparency and regulatory standing matter.

Honest risk note
USDC depends on the solvency of its issuer and the banks holding its reserves, as the March-2023 episode showed. It is a private dollar substitute, not a bank deposit, and is not government-insured.
