What it is
Ethereum, live since 2015, is a blockchain designed to run programs ("smart contracts"), not just record payments. Its native coin, ether (ETH), pays for the computing used to run those programs.
How it works
Developers deploy code that runs exactly as written across the network. Since 2022 Ethereum secures itself through "staking": holders lock up ETH to help validate transactions and earn a reward, replacing Bitcoin-style mining. ETH has no fixed maximum supply, though a portion of fees is destroyed with each transaction.
Why it matters
Most of the stablecoins, tokenized assets and decentralised applications in crypto run on Ethereum or networks built around it. That makes ETH less a "digital gold" story and more a bet on the usage of the platform itself.

Honest risk note
ETH is volatile and competes with faster, cheaper rival networks. Staking introduces its own risks (lock-ups, validator penalties), and smart-contract bugs on the platform have led to large losses. No maximum supply means scarcity is not guaranteed the way it is for bitcoin.
