What it is
Bitcoin, launched in 2009, was the first cryptocurrency: a way to hold and move value over the internet without a bank or central issuer. There will only ever be 21 million bitcoin, released on a fixed, publicly known schedule.
How it works
A global network of computers records every transaction on a shared public ledger (the blockchain). New blocks are added roughly every ten minutes by "miners" who compete to solve an energy-intensive puzzle; the winner is rewarded in new bitcoin, and that reward halves about every four years.
Why it matters
Bitcoin is the reference point for the whole asset class — the largest by market value and the most widely held. It is often described as "digital gold": people hold it as a scarce, non-sovereign store of value rather than to spend day to day.

Honest risk note
Bitcoin is highly volatile — double-digit swings in a single day are normal, and it has fallen more than 70% from previous peaks. It pays no yield, its value rests entirely on what others will pay, and holdings can be lost permanently if private keys are lost or stolen.
